Absolutely worth watching.

I love videos like this.  What we have here is a video of how speed works in the Sonic games as well as a few others.  Watched it once and now I'm about to watch it a second time, if you will excuse me.

  1. I really agree with everything he said excluding his view on how 3D Sonic should be.
While most of his points about Adventure and 06 were true, I had to disagree with some things he said about the 3D games Unleashed on-wards, since he was basically implying that sonic in 3D should be represented through dumbed down gameplay which requires less player input on simplistic level designs instead of open, non-linear levels just to maintain a good flow.
Nonetheless, that video was a good watch.

    1. I have to disagree with you there. A lot of people think that Sonic Unleashed is just some one button go game, but that is highly inaccurate unless you're judging the game based on the demo or have never played it in it's entirety or at all. The only bit of truth to that lies in the 1st main full stage (Windmill Isle Act 2) where the stage is so straight forward that you can mostly hold down the boost button and complete the stage with minimal involvement and that's just playing the stage on a casual level. After that stage, you can't do that anymore because boosting will without a doubt get Sonic easily killed. Most of the stages may be linear, but they are very, very far from uninvolved as they require you to use your reflexes to move Sonic quickly around, over and under obstacles while he's moving really fast. The game gets harder the faster you go and Sonic's speed in Unleashed isn't only centered around a boost button, but actually every single one of his abilities except his sweep attack.

The reason why he says the current games work is because Sonic's speed has a sense of control within his environment through all of his abilities (not just boosting). The adventure games didn't capture that connection as well as the current 3D games do, but without the adventure games even taking that step, Sonic wouldn't be where he is right now. Unlike Unleashed, Generations isn't linear at all. The stages require you to do a lot more platforming and again, it's no walk in the park to keep Sonic continuously moving fast going from one platform to the next.

If you have any doubts about it - seriously, try doing something like this. Even if it's the first full Act, it's not easy at all going this fast: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVN8yiuHJJQ&feature=g-user-u
